I have developed my own analogy for comparing dog food manufacturers in the most simple was I can.
Dog food is like a burger. (Bear with me.)
For dog food to be able to be on our shelves in the UK it has to be suitable for dogs. Sounds obvious. It has to provide basic and balanced nutrition.
Now a burger is not balanced nutrition. But it can be used as a good analogy to compare dog food. Burgers come in differing levels of quality. A burger you would buy from a value frozen pack from a supermarket will not be 100% meat. It will have additions like onion, cereal, wheat flour and other bulking ingredients. But it is still suitable for human consumption. A burger you buy from a butcher or premium outlet will usually be 100% meat or pretty close to. Still this is suitable for human consumption.
Where am I going with this you wonder. Well, although the cheaper burger is suitable for us, we may not utilise all the ingredients in the burger. They are added to keep the cost down. To get the same quantity of meat from the cheaper burger you would have to eat two compared to the one premium burger.
Back to dog food. A less expensive dog food will have a lower meat quantity and will be bulked out with cereals. This doesn't mean it is unbalanced or bad but the dog will not utilise all the ingredients and much will pass through undigested.
A premium dog food will have a high meat content and will have additions like rice or sweet potato which are easier for dogs to digest. They will not include things like wheat that dogs do not need in their diet. You will find that dogs will have to eat less with a premium food to get the same level of nutrition as a less expensive food as they are getting more of the ingredients their body can utilise.
Meat is expensive. You will pay more for a premium dog food because the meat content is higher. Of course there are other factors that come in to play, many will contain joint supplements and oils and will have a high standard of other ingredients..
